Finally was outside when it was both light out and not snowing like a bastard and discovered the gutters have gotten a bit iced up.

No problem, I'll get the ladder & some tools out of the shed and deal with this.

Kinja'd!!!

Option S (for Stupid): Get into the shed just enough to get some gas, mix with packing peanuts, and napalm the ice dam. What are you, chicken?

beautiful brackets. I bet theres some nice crown molding under the aluminum trim.

I've been dealing with the same crap. My ladder was already out in the back yard but it triples in wieght when its covered in ice and snow. Also trying to move the thing around in 4' of snow sucks. We have rain coming this weekend so I NEED to get my roof cleared.

packing peanuts don't stay lit for long. I know, I tried.

I have a dam that builds itself every damned (see what I did there?) year right where my porch meets my garage, meaning the overflow happens right into my porch steps and walkway.

really need to fix that...

Throw some snow balls at them.

I used to live in an apartment that iced like that all the time we'd open the windows and shoot them with bb's from the inside. Usually while drinking.

Peanuts don't on their own, but they melt on exposure with gas and thicken the mix. Now, to get enough styrene bulk into homemade napalm to work well really is better with acetone, but...

I'm sure there is what was once some beautiful trim under the aluminum, what it looks like now is anyone's guess. Judging by the way the former owners approached other maintenance though, I'm guessing they let it go til it was a rotting mess, then had it covered in aluminum.

I want to strip the siding off the house and restore all the original details, but that will have to wait til I have 20K+ to throw at it in case it is as bad as I suspect it will be.

Ice dams can cause some serious water damage. I would try and do something.

This trick does work, without a ladder you can "toss 'em up"

yea trim is expensive and hard to get right. I always end up with a gap i have to fill with putty or caulk or sumthin.

I hope it hasn't spread up under your shingles! That could make some serious damage to the roof.

You can probably prevent it next winter by improving the ventilation in the attic to keep the roof colder, and adding more insulation. It could run upwards of $1000 though.
